I specialise in the not-for-profit sector. The vast majority of my client work involves conducting audits, undertaking consultancy, and training and preparing financial accounts for charities and trade unions.
The work I do is largely a mix between auditing the accounts of charities and trade unions, and strategic consultancy work. Much of the strategic advice I offer is around budgeting or governance, and training of charity staff or trustees to help them better understand their financial accounts and responsibilities.
I recently conducted a couple of charity training sessions two weeks apart. When I returned to conduct the second training session a participant came up to me and told me they had already rebuilt and redesigned their management accounts and submitted it to the charity’s trustees who, in turn, said they now understood how the finances of the charity worked. Being able to see advice being put into practice so quickly, and the positive impact that it has, is honestly, for me, as good as it gets.
I have nearly 25 years’ experience of working in the not-for-profit sector, training with Coopers Lybrand and then working for Drive for Youth, a motivational charity, as its development manager for two and a half years before joining HW Fisher in 1997.
I am a trustee of the Big Issue Foundation and hold the ICAEW Diploma in Charity Accounting.
