Ever wondered what a trainee tax adviser gets up to each day? Travis Martin, a trainee in our Private Client department, talks to us about his role at HW Fisher, from the most important tasks of the day, to why he likens working in accounting to the satisfaction of completing a Sudoku. We’re intrigued…
How did you get into accounting?
I joined the firm straight from Lancaster University after studying law with politics. I did a tax module in my degree and realised I had an interest in all things tax, especially private client tax and personal tax, so pursuing a career in something I enjoyed made sense.
What’s the first thing you do to start your day?
Have breakfast! I believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It not only supplies me with the energy I need for a work day, it’s also a good excuse to move around!
What is your most important task of the day?
My to-do list! A list helps identify my goals for the day and keeps me on track. It is extremely satisfying to cross off a task once it is complete!
What kind of clients do you work with?
I am very fortunate to have a varied client portfolio. Clients include landlords, doctors, directors, MPs, professional athletes and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.
What’s the last thing you do before finishing work for the day?
I like to end the day by assessing how successful my day has been, by going through my to-do list set in the morning. Once I have completed that, I like to organize my emails and calendar so when I start in the morning, I can have an idea of what the day ahead looks like.
How do you keep up to date with finance industry news?
There are many ways of keeping up to date with financial industry news at HW Fisher. We are sent STEP UK News Digest reports each week which gives summaries of topical news stories about finance and tax. We are also fortunate to have regular training days with respected professionals who provide an up on the most recent changes in financial law.
What do you enjoy most about working in accounting?
When everything calculates and balances! Nothing feels better than having a perfectly calculated excel worksheet. I compare it to completing a Sudoku every day.
What do you like best about working at HW Fisher?
I love the responsibility you get. I am fortunate to have managers who trust me and who are always looking for ways to develop my career.
Trainees are also given a lot of independence which is something I enjoy. The department is also very diverse which is lovely.
What are the biggest changes since working from home?
Working from home has changed everything. The most important change has been more time on a work/life balance. The time I would spend on my commute has now been transferred to time exercising or cooking.
When not at work, what do you like to do?
I love to be active. You will find me playing football or basketball, cycling with my dad. I also love to cook! Food is the key to my heart.
