Charities paying too much VAT on energy bills

It is estimated that charities are currently overpaying £78 million of tax on energy bills.

Charities should pay VAT at only 5% on energy used for non-business activities and are also exempt from Climate Change Levy. In order to get these reliefs, a charity needs only to send a certificate, including their charity number, to their energy supplier.

If VAT has been overpaid for several years, it is possible to agree a VAT credit note with your energy supplier going back over the last four years.
