Taxpayers will become subject to new fines from HMRC that came into effect on 17 February, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has warned accountants.
The coalition government has once again opened the discussion on the introduction of a general anti-avoidance rule (GAAR) to tackle fraudulent tax avoidance.
New powers to tackle employers who try to dodge paying their employees' PAYE (Pay As You Earn) tax or National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are to be given to HM Revenue and Customs. The powers will be coming into effect on 6 April.
